Maremma Sheepdogs
Are your sheepdogs registered?
Actually no, our sheepdogs are not registered, they are purebred out of working Maremma bloodlines. We are careful with our breeding program, not to interbreed, use less than ideal dogs etc. When we searched for dogs we couldn't find any registered dogs that were well trained LGDS. We looked for about 2 years. And in the process we tried out a registered, "trained" adult Maremma that ended up eating 7 lambs before we realized it was her. So we decided to go with some expensive purebreds that ended up being the best dogs we have ever owned!
How well do you Socialize your Puppies?
Honestly, we believe that a good sheep dog with follow it's sheep and protect them no matter how far from home they stray, also we believe that a well trained LGD will lick bloody newborn lambs clean, yet not even think about eating them. Puppies are naturally inclined to want to be with people, people are more interesting than sheep, and so just feeding our puppies every day is more than enough socialization, we don't pet them until they have proven themselves, and show that they are perpetually bonded with the sheep.
Are your dogs leash trained?
No they are not, spending the time to train one of them the basics of obedience, which is what many people say a LGD needs to know (sit, stay, lay down, come, go) would be too much socializing. Our dogs we can put collars on, but they are not in the least bit trained as far as leading and basics of obedience. They are trained to be sheep dogs, not show dogs, not pets. Any dog that has ever been shown, is too sweet and bonded with people to make a true guardian.
How old are your puppies when you sell them?
We sell our puppies as 8 week olds if they are going to pet homes. Otherwise it just depends on what the buyer wants.
Do You Ship Your Puppies
yes we ship puppies and adults as well. Puppies must be 8 weeks old or more, and the buyer pays for a crate to ship them in and the shipping. We have also sold puppies and adults to several farms in Canada.
What fencing works well for sheepdogs?
A farm fence with a strand of barbed wire at the top seems to be the best for keeping sheepdogs in. Usually whatever a pup is raised in he will be happy in.
